MANILA, Philippines – The House Justice Committee has approved the proposal to have NBA player Andray Blatche naturalized to boost Gilas Pilipinas' chances in the upcoming FIBA World Basketball Cup.
House Bill 3784, which was filed by Antipolo City Rep. Robbie Puno, made it through despite 1-BAP Party Rep. Silvestre Bello III’s move to oppose the proposal.
According to Jon Ibanez’s report to dzMM, Bello wants the Brooklyn Nets’ center to appear before the committee to make sure the player is sincere in his intent to represent the Philippines.
However, Ako-Bicol Party Rep. Rodel Batocabe stressed that they are pressed for time since the tournament will take place in Spain from August to September.
He said the bill is set for second reading before Congress goes on recess by March 15.
Blatche stands 6-foot-11 and has been playing in the NBA since 2005.
Meanwhile, the Gilas Pilipinas players have begun their weekly practices for the FIBA Worlds.
National team coach Chot Reyes has included Greg Slaughter, Paul Lee, Jared Dillinger and Marcio Lassiter to the original 13-man pool composed of La Tenorio, Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro, Gary David, Larry Fonacier, Ranidel de Ocampo, Mark Pingris, Japeth Aguilar, Junemar Fajardo, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga and naturalized citizen Marcus Douthit.
From the pool, Reyes will choose the final lineup which will be fielded to the World Cup.
“This is the final pool. We don't have enough time as it is for the pool so it will be very hard to change it. This is the pool for the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games. We don't know who's going to play where. But if people are going to miss practice, then we'll have to drop them. If you miss one or two practices then you're out of the team. They are aware of that,” said Reyes. – With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

Heat trade Roger Mason Jr. to Kings to free up roster spot
The Miami Heat traded guard Roger Mason Jr. to the Sacramento Kings for a conditional second-round 2015 draft pick, it was announced Thursday.
Mason Jr. signed a non-guaranteed contract before the season and appeared in 25 games (two starts). He averaged 3.0 points and 10.4 minutes while shooting 37.3 percent from the field.
The veteran journeyman, whose contract became guaranteed in January, played on Heat coach Erik Spoelstra's first summer league team.
"Obviously, this is the tough business side of basketball," Spoelstra said of the trade.
Mason Jr., 33, reportedly will be waived by the Kings and become a free agent, meaning the Heat will not get to use the conditional draft pick.
The move opens a roster spot on Miami's roster. It has been reported the Heat might be interested in adding a free-agent wing player after Thursday's trade deadline.
Mason Jr.'s most notable moment with the Heat occurred off the court. He and his sister were among the victims during a robbery at a Miami restaurant in December.
LeBron drops 33, leaves bloodied as Heat spoil Westbrook's return to OKC
OKLAHOMA CITY -- LeBron James sat silently in front of his locker with a towel draped over his head, not wanting to reveal the effects of a hit to his nose that prematurely ended his night.
His Miami Heat teammates finished off a 103-81 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder without him on Thursday night.
Miami's star forward went down with 5:50 remaining after he was struck by Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka on a drive to the basket. James finished the dunk, but he was bloodied and he left the court with a towel over his face.
"I'm like everybody else, you're used to seeing him like Superman, get up and sprint back even after tough hits and tough falls," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "So we knew something was up."
James landed the hardest blow long before that. He scored 16 of his 33 points in the first quarter to put the Thunder in a bind, and the Heat rolled to a lopsided win.
James passed a concussion test, but some damage was done.
"He has a swollen nose right now. It's bleeding," Spoelstra said. "We'll evaluate him when we get back to Miami, but it's sore."
The Thunder were the ones shaken up after James made his first five shots and scored 12 points in the first 4:11.
"It was flawless," Wade said. "He was aggressive defensively, he was able to play passing lanes and be who he is. That was a great start on the road by our leader. It was something that we needed."
Wade had 24 points and 10 assists, and Chris Bosh added 24 points for Miami, which won its fourth straight and avenged an earlier loss to Oklahoma City. It was a good step for the Heat, who are trying to catch Indiana for the top record in the Eastern Conference.
"You can see the resolve," Wade said. "You can see the chemistry. You can see a team that's gearing up for the second half of the season."
Kevin Durant scored 28 points for Oklahoma City, which lost at home for the first time since Jan. 5.
Durant has been the popular favorite to win the NBA MVP award, but Wade said James is still in the hunt.
"It's not decided," Wade said. "I don't think that was a message. That was LeBron James being LeBron James. He loves the matchup, just like KD loves the matchup. The MVP is long, long from over."
Russell Westbrook, who had missed the previous 27 games after having surgery on his right knee, started and scored 16 points in 24 minutes. He made 4 of 12 shots.
"I'm just going to keep getting him better, and as the season goes along, as he gets more comfortable in game shape, we're going to see a better Russell every night," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said.
The Thunder overcame an early 18-point deficit on Jan. 29 to roll past the Heat 112-95 in Miami, and the home fans hoped for a regular-season sweep against the team that beat Oklahoma City in the 2012 finals.
Instead, they saw a rare inefficient game from the Thunder.
"When you don't have good rhythm, normally the three-ball can get you back into the game," Brooks said. "We didn't have shot makers tonight. We've had them for a while now. We didn't have them tonight."
The crowd erupted as Westbrook was introduced as a starter. His first minute of action was furious and had the fans on their feet. His first basket was a two-handed, fast-break dunk 37 seconds into the game, and he got a steal 17 seconds later.
The excitement quickly evaporated. James scored 10 points in the first 3:11 and Miami made 13 of its first 14 shots to take a 28-13 lead. The Heat were ahead 34-17 at the end of the first quarter.
They extended their lead to 19 points in the second quarter before the Thunder rallied behind Westbrook. He scored nine points in the final 1:55 of the first half, including a dunk in the closing seconds, to trim Miami's lead to 54-47 at the break.
Miami took control early in the third quarter. James scored six points during a 10-0 run that helped the Heat take a 64-49 lead. The advantage grew to 75-53 on a 3-pointer by James with just over five minutes left in the frame.
Durant scored seven points in the final 2:46 of the quarter to trim Miami's edge to 76-65 heading into the fourth.
Miami reasserted itself in the opening minutes of the final period. Bosh hit a 3-pointer to bump the Heat's lead to 19 with just under 10 minutes to go.
The Heat won for the fifth time during their six-game road trip. Miami beat the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix, Golden State and Dallas before closing with a win against the team with the league's best record.
"It's good to finish it this way," Spoelstra said.
Magic Musings: 'Melo sinks 44, but Orlando earns win
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic, who had gone 0-2 since the All-Star break and were 0-4 this season in overtime games, broke through on both accounts with a 129-121 double-overtime victory Friday night over the New York Knicks.
Even a 44-point performance by Carmelo Anthony was not enough to keep the Magic from ending a nine-game losing streak to the Knicks dating back to March 2012. The Magic trailed by 14 points in the third quarter but battled back and took a 98-96 lead on a basket by Maurice Harkless with 5:28 remaining off Victor Oladipo's 12th assist.
Arron Afflalo tied the game in the final minute of regulation with a stepback jumper. Neither team scored the rest of the way, with Nikola Vucevic missing on a wild running jump shot at the horn.
Vucevic also failed to convert a feed from Oladipo near the rim at the end of the first overtime.
Afflalo had 32 points before going down in a heap with an apparent ankle injury after assisting on a basket by Oladipo with 2:23 to go in the second overtime. He was helped to his feet and limped to the locker room.
Tobias Harris had 22 points and eight rebounds despite being matched up against Anthony for much of the game. Vucevic finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out.
The Knicks ended the second quarter on a 19-6 run that included nine points from Anthony as they took a 60-53 halftime lead. The Magic had only two field goals in the final six minutes of the half.
THE TURNING POINT
Oladipo's three-point play gave the Magic a 120-115 lead in the second overtime, and another three-point play by him sealed the win with 30.7 seconds remaining.
THE DIFFERENCE MAKER
In his first start since Feb. 3, Oladipo scored eight of his 30 points in the second overtime and established a career high in assists with 14.
STAT OF THE GAME
E'Twaun Moore played a season-high 34 minutes off the Magic bench, while Jameer Nelson went only 1 of 8 from the floor and did not play at all in the fourth quarter or either overtime.
LeBron suffers broken nose, game-time decision for Bulls
LebBron James suffered a broken nose during the Miami Heat's victory at Oklahoma City on Thursday night, the team announced Friday.
Via press release, the Heat, who did not practice Friday, said James had been re-evaluated in Miami, and his status for Sunday afternoon's meeting with the Chicago Bulls at AmericanAirlines Arena would be a game-time decision.
James was hurt late in Miami's 103-81 win against the Thunder. He left the game with 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter after being hit in the face by defender Serge Ibaka's hand on a driving basket. The Heat star suffered a bloody nose, and held a towel to his face while being escorted to the locker room. He did not return.
James scored 33 points and hit 15 of 22 shots before exiting.
